My Product Development teacher in FIT was a tough guy, very sarcastic and sometimes a bit demeaning, but one of the great things he taught me was to listen to what the big guns at the top luxe department stores were saying. He said that most runway reviews that come out are never overly critical because of course, publications don't want to alienate advertisers, so that all-raves article on a designer you're reading in WWD might not be as objective as you think. But fashion buyers at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdale's review collections with the eyes of those who have a pulse on what consumers really like. And ultimately, they are the ones who decide what's going to show up on their racks.
